Secular Good Friday Procession

Comune di Montefiore Conca

Events may be subject to change, always contact organizers before going to the venue.

Friday 3 April sees the return in Montefiore Conca of the centuries-old Good Friday procession, an ancient rite whose origins are lost in time.
Torches and lighted fires will illuminate the descent from Calvary and the deposition of the Dead Christ in the Sepulchre, accompanying him through the streets of the village to the Hospital Church.

The procession, dressed in historical costumes, starts at 9.30 pm from the Capuchin monastery and represents Jesus' descent from Golgotha and the deposition of his body in the Holy Sepulchre.
There will be about one hundred participants wearing period costumes to revive, in the streets of Montefiore Conca, a glimpse of Jerusalem two thousand years ago: among them will be the members of the confraternities (wearing black and white hoods), the Madonnas, the apostles, Pontius Pilate, and the little angels (about fifteen children from Montefiore Conca) who will carry the symbols of the Passion of Christ.

The Good Friday Procession is a tradition rich in symbolism, with references to the sacred scriptures and Christian rituals.
