Castello di Montechiarugolo

Montechiarugolo castle is located on the left side of the Enza river in a strategic position between Parma and Reggio Emilia.

Vistitors will be impressed by the thick defensive walls that used to protect the fortress: once inside, an italian style garden will enchant you . The rooms, all decorated with frescoes, will show you the real renaissance essence of this fortress.

Pomponio Torelli (1539- 1608), an humanistic poet and artist, who used to live in this fortress, invited in Montechiarugolo the most famous artists of those times to pain the stunning frescoes.

The balcony offers a marvelous sight on the Enza river and the province of Reggio Emilia.

A bit of History

The original structure was built in XIII century but was destroyed in 1313. The current structure was rebuilt in XV century by Guido Torelli as a military fortress. The structure was very well defended and visitors can still see the strong defensive system.

With Pomponio Torelli, an humanistic artist and poet, the fortress became a residence where the most famous artists and poets used to stay.

Legends & Ghost Stories

Leggenda narra la presenza nel Castello di Montechiarugolo della bella e giovane Fata Bema: la sua storia conquista tutti! Arrivò a Montechiarugolo nel maggio del 1593 per esercitare la sua magica arte di indovina e fattucchiera. Si esibì su un palco allestito nel maniero, circondato dai boschi, dove si recava spesso a caccia Ranuccio Farnese, quarto Duca di Parma.

Attirato dalla bellezza e dai poteri della fanciulla, il tenebroso Duca l’appoggiò finché la superstizione e la paura non lo accecarono di timore. Temendo d’essere caduto preda di un incantesimo, fece imprigionare Fata Bema nelle segrete e decide di condannarla a morte.

Ma Pio Torelli, figlio del precettore Pomponio, era perdutamente innamorato della bella Fata Bema: Pio viene accusato di congiura ai danni del Duca e giustiziato con altri feudatari nella “Gran giustizia di
Ranuccio I” il 19 maggio 1612. Ma il potere del Duca nulla poté contro la dolcezza della Fata Bema che, amata e benvoluta dalla gente del borgo, terminò poi serenamente la sua vita a Montechiarugolo, dove ancora oggi appare - secondo la leggenda - in forma di gentile fantasma, alle giovani donne alla vigilia delle nozze per istruirle sulla loro nuova vita.
