«GLORIOSUS FRANCISCUS». The Franciscans in Busseto in history, art and community life

The event consists of three moments that can also be enjoyed separately:

• 10:30 a.m. – Guided tour of the treasures of the Church and the Monastery, with a narrative of the important role of the Franciscans in Busseto in history, art and community life.
Some examples: the Monte di Pietà of Busseto was established in 1537 at the initiative of the Franciscan Father Giovanni Antonio Maiavacca, with the aim of combating usury by offering pawn loans to the less well-off. The typical bread of Busseto, the “miseria”, is said to derive its name from the daily distribution to the poor of the town by the friars at the midday bell, hence nicknamed the “bell of misery”. Father Ireneo Affò (1741-1797), a man of letters and art historian belonging to the Order of Observant Friars Minor and from 1785 librarian of the Biblioteca Palatina of Parma, lived in the convent.

• 12:30 p.m. – Lunch in the cloister: “What the convent provides” (first course, second course, side dish, cake, water and wine)

• 3:00 p.m. – Concert «GLORIOSUS FRANCISCUS» The Franciscan ideal in music between the Middle Ages and the Renaissance with the ensemble Anonima Frottolisti of Assisi:

Through “Gloriosus Franciscus”, Anonima Frottolisti offers a cross-section of the history of music dedicated to the Franciscan ideal across the first three centuries of the Order’s history, an anthological journey capable of highlighting both the learned character and the closeness to “popularising” devotion between the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, a symbolic recognition of the city that saw the birth of the ensemble.

Anonima Frottolisti was founded in 2008 in Assisi and focuses on the medieval and Renaissance repertoire, with particular attention to the musical productions of Italian and European Humanism. It has performed in Italy and abroad at some of the most important European early music festivals: Sweden, Lithuania, Bosnia, England, Switzerland, Slovenia, Croatia, Spain, Germany. For the Tactus label it has released: “MUSICA DISONESTA” – “GLORIOSUS FRANCISCUS” – “DI CORTE IN CORTE” – “ALMA SVEGLIATE ORMAI” – “LA MUSICA NELLE LETTERE D’ISABELLA D’ESTE”. For Brillant, in collaboration with Armoniosoincanto (dir. Franco Radicchia), it has recorded the complete Laudario di Cortona. For the Ritmi production it has recorded the “Passio Sancti Ruphyni”, a medieval Passion dedicated to the Patron Saint of the city of Assisi. The ensemble is artistic director of the Festival Musica dalla Torre – Marciano della Chiana (Ar) and collaborates with the Accademia d’Arti Antiche Resonars on educational projects related to medieval and Renaissance music. In 2020 the ensemble was nominated for the International Classical Music Awards. The ensemble has collaborated on film productions, television series, and international radio and television programmes, including: “L’ombra di Caravaggio”, “I Borgia”, RaiRadio3, RSI2, Radio HRT, Rai1, and documentaries on Franciscanism by Lauro Production. In 2021 it composed the soundtrack for the film “Chiara” by director Susanna Nicchiarelli, in competition at the 79th Venice Biennale.
