The Great Art in Cinema Review
The docu-film offers the exceptional possibility of visiting, thanks to cinema, the exhibition at the National Gallery in London (which has just finished) that has captivated audiences all over the world, in some ways rewriting the history of an artist about whom we thought we already knew every detail.
Just like the exhibition, VAN GOGH. POETS AND LOVERS explores the years spent in the south of France, where Van Gogh revolutionised his style, changing the course of art forever. Moving step by step through his brushstrokes, director David Bickerstaff specifically investigates the painter's relationship with poetry and love, his tireless research, his revolutionary use of colour and his unique style.
Produced with Exhibition on Screen by Phil Grabsky, who also co-wrote the script with the director, the film also delves into the real reasons behind Van Gogh's move to the south of France and the outcomes of a choice that changed his life forever. As well as offering an in-depth look at the mental health of Van Gogh, who was admitted to the Hôtel-Dieu in Arles and made immortal in his paintings, the film highlights the acute intelligence and burning passion that fuelled an extraordinary career.
